The term wanderlust originates from the German language; wandern meaning “to hike or wander,” and lust implying “joy or desire.” It encapsulates a yearning – a desire to journey, explore, and uncover new places. Julia Nimke is a photographer from Berlin, specializing in commercial and lifestyle photography, and her work perfectly embodies this concept. Her art captures scenic spots around the globe with a distinct aesthetic that utilizes lighting, color, and composition.

Nimke’s photographs strike a balance between majesty and tranquility. Take, for example, a hut on the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which in the darkness emits a warm yellow glow, beckoning the weary traveler into its embrace. However, this cozy refuge is dwarfed by the surrounding massive crags that spike towards the heavens. The Matterhorn is not only the most-photographed mountain on the planet, but it also presents a formidable challenge to climbers.

In other scenes, Nimke showcases vibrant greenery, meandering paths, and towering trees. Her unique perspective often uses car windows, doorways, or other frames to blend the external environment with the interior, thus adorning the spreads of Time Out and Lufthansa Magazine. Her work teems with intimate portraits, broad vistas, and intricate close-ups that collectively compose an intricate depiction of our planet – and the essence of venturing off the familiar road.
